Notes on a lecture about characterizing approaches to design. This stuff is particularly interesting to me because I’ve only just started my professional design career and though I’ve taken many courses with the word “design” in their titles, most of those courses focus on the activities surrounding design instead of design itself. User research, system analysis, evaluation techniques… But what about design? This is because design requires a leap from the data, and making that leap requires experience and creativity. And those aren’t things that you can cover in a university program. Developing these skills are what I look forward to most as I continue to develop as a designer. I look forward to seeing myself grow, and so putting myself into a situation where I have the opportunity to grow is my primary career objective (though knowing this and telling it to myself constantly didn’t make quitting my job yesterday any easier).
